New Delhi: The Ministry of Steel’s temporary relaxation from BIS certification requirements for certain steel products is set to expire on 30 June 2026, triggering the need for affected importers and manufacturers to evaluate their readiness for mandatory compliance from 1 July 2026.
Businesses dealing in these products should check whether their products, including the relevant IS standard and ITC(HS) code, are covered under the exemption notification. They should also ensure that any shipments intended to benefit from the exemption have a Bill of Lading dated on or before 30 June 2026. Companies planning to continue importing these products after the exemption expires should begin the BIS certification process as soon as possible, as obtaining certification may involve documentation, product testing, factory inspections, and regulatory approvals.
The exemption currently applies to the following products covered under the notified Steel Quality Control Orders:
- IS 10325:2000 – Square Tins (15 kg/litre) for Ghee, Vanaspati, Edible Oils and Bakery Shortenings
- IS 1161:2014 – Steel Tubes for Structural Purposes
- IS 1239 (Part 1):2004 – Steel Tubes, Tubulars and Other Wrought Steel Fittings – Steel Tubes
- 13997:2014 – Drums, Large Open Top
- IS 14756:2024 – Stainless Steel Utensils
- IS 15155:2020 – Bar or Wire Wrapped Steel Cylinder Products Pipes with Mortar Lining and Coating
- IS 1783 (Part 1):2014 – Drums, Large, Fixed Ends, Grade A
- IS 1783 (Part 2):2014 – Drums, Large, Fixed Ends, Grade B
- IS 17875:2022 – Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes and Tubes for General Services
- IS 17876:2022 – Stainless Steel Welded Pipes and Tubes for General Services
Businesses relying on the exemption should closely monitor any further notifications from the Ministry of Steel regarding a possible extension beyond 30 June 2026. In the absence of any such extension, compliance with the applicable BIS certification requirements will become mandatory from 1 July 2026.
