The Cyber Security Law of the PRC, formally approved last November, 7 by the Standing Committee of NPC, came into effect on June 1, 2017. It is the consolidation and restatement of various existing cyber security and personal protection rules in a national-level law. This shows that the Chinese government has raised these matters higher in its agenda: the Cyber Security Law is the first legislation at the national law level which establishes the legal principles for protection of personal data and its use and misuse by network operators.

It aims to fight against cyber crimes ensuring the criminal, administrative and legal liability against individuals and entities who commit cyber fraud and cyber crime. The new law requires all critical information infrastructure operators to store personal information and important business data in China, as well as to provide technical assistance to security agencies and pass national security reviews.
