The 11th Ed. Nice Classification Launched Officially

The Nice Classification (NCL), established by the Nice Agreement (1957), is an international classification of goods and services applied for the registration of trademarks. The latest edition of NCL came into effective on Jan. 1st, 2017.

As required by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Member states of Nice Union shall launch the 11th Edition of the NCL, which is the latest version of NCL, since January 1st, 2017. Based on it, China Trademark Office – CTO – has also made corresponding adjustments that have taken effect on the same day. Applications for trademark registration submitted on or after January 1st, 2017 shall refer to the new edition, while those submitted before that date still referred to the previous edition.

Compared to the previous edition, there are modifications in classes 3, 6, 10, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 26, 28, 31 and 45, as well as the annotations for classes 5, 11, 29, 30, 35, 42 and 44 in 11th Edition of the NCL.

The updated NCL by alphabetical order also contains several new services, including mobile phone unlock in class 42, dog walking, wearable assistance and hosting religious rites in class 45.

Items like lash curler (class 21), foam toe separator for pedicure (class 21) and herb extracts for cosmetic purposes (class 3) have been added in the newly updated Nice Classification, with existing items such as false eyelashes (class 3), manicure toolkit (class 8) and wig for hair extension (class 21).
